Tulsa’s environmentally friendly vehicles are now easily identified by bumper stickers and logos that announce them as members of the City of Tulsa’s Green Fleet.
Taylor announced the brand last Friday at a morning news conference held at RiverWest Festival Park. Four City vehicles were on hand, including the newest addition to the fleet, a CNG Trash truck. Other vehicles included two CNG Honda Civics and a Ford Escape Hybrid.
About five percent of the City’s vehicle fleet is “green.” This includes hybrids and vehicles using CNG fuel. Currently, the fleet includes: 10 Hybrid vehicles, including two Toyota Prius, two Ford Escapes and six Honda Civic Hybrids; and 14 CNG vehicles, including (12) Honda Civics, a Crane Carrier CNG Trash Truck, and a 1994 Chevy converted CNG pick-up.
In 2008, 89 vehicles were ordered that either use alternative fuels or have energy efficient engines. Most of those vehicles, ordered to replace worn-out vehicles with high mileage and maintenance costs, have not yet been received.
Grant money from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Improvement Program, administered by the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Transit Administration, assisted with the purchase of several of the vehicles, including the CNG trash truck.
