February is Family Month at the PAC

The Tulsa Performing Arts Center hosts a range of events this month that are tailor-made for families. Fairy tales abound with Cinderella and Hansel and Gretel, and more family fare can be enjoyed with a number of musical programs geared for children, including The Wizard of Oz.

Come-from-behind stories that end in triumph are always in fashion. Add a sprinkling of sweet romance and a fairy-dusting of humor, and enchantment blossoms. Tulsa Ballet’s Cinderella is perfect for families, dance fans or for someone’s favorite Valentine. Tickets for the Feb. 6 – 8 performances are $20 – $70.

Songs of the Heart II — Journey of the Generations features a wide range of music genres performed by notable local performers, including opera, gospel and jazz singer Ernestine Dillard. The show is on Feb. 7, presented by Nubian Heritage Arts. Tickets are $10.

In 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus. This inspirational musical, presented by the PAC Trust on Feb. 13, dispels myths about Parks and her protest. Walk On: The Story of Rosa Parks is performed by Mad River Theater Works from Ohio. This show is sold out.

Families also can enjoy an exceptional chamber music group, The Talich Quartet, a Czech ensemble that is considered to be one of the world’s finest music groups. Chamber Music Tulsa presents Talich on Feb. 15. Tickets are $25, $22 (seniors) and $15 (students). Talich will perform music by Schubert, Kalliwoda and Dvorák.

Theatre Tulsa stages Educating Rita, Feb. 20 – 28. The play is about a hairdresser who aspires to be well-educated, and her burned out, disillusioned tutor. Who teaches the most to whom is the crux of this comedy written by Willy Russell. Tickets are $17.50 and $15.

Playhouse Theatre stages the classic Romeo and Juliet with a twist. Shakespeare’s tale of star-crossed lovers is not performed against the backdrop of old Verona, but in a timeless setting. “It’s not only the greatest love story ever told, it’s also about conquering hate,” says the show’s director, Chris Crawford. Tickets to the Feb. 20 – 28 performances are $15 and $10.

There’s no place like the PAC to see this classic musical come to life! American Family Theatre’s award-winning production of The Wizard of Oz, presented by the PAC Trust, plays Feb. 20 – 21. Tickets are $8.

Introduce your family to opera!  Hansel and Gretel, sung in English and presented by Tulsa Opera is a rich theatrical experience you won’t want to miss. Sets are designed by Where The Wild Things Are author Maurice Sendak. The opera runs Feb. 21, 27 and March 1. Tickets range in price from $20 to $95.
