Divine Performing Arts, World Tour 2009

Divine Performing Arts (DPA) brings to life ancient heroic Chinese legends and modern courageous tales in one colorful and exhilarating dance and music show.

An unprecedented collaboration of leading Chinese dancers, choreographers, and musicians, DPA seeks to breathe new life into traditional Chinese culture and provide an experience of sublime beauty. Based in New York, the company is a nonprofit entity that is consciously independent of China's political regime under which the traditional arts have long suffered.

The performance, scheduled for March 18 at 7 p.m., showcases original music composed to fit perfectly with the dancers’ movements. The music is performed by the company’s own orchestra — a masterful fusion of Western and ancient Chinese instruments.

All of this takes place against beautiful digital backdrops depicting majestic celestial palaces, sprawling Mongolian grasslands and cascading clouds.

From radiant, golden-hued, Tang Dynasty gowns to elegant Manchu chopine shoes, the dazzling array of outfits worn by the 90-member cast helps create historically inspired scenes in which silken dresses swirl and flow like water, and brave warriors do battle in vibrant uniforms.

Last year DPA performed for more than 600,000 audience members as it toured 66 cities around the world. The company has previously sold out Radio City Music Hall. Critics have called the show ‘superb,’ ‘resplendent,’ ‘inspired,’ and ‘wonderfully positive.’
