Greetings:
On April 1, the 2010 Census Count officially begins. We will mark the start of the 2010 Census, at 1:30, March 31, during a City Hall news conference where we will introduce City of Tulsa Complete Count Committee members. This committee will bring a face to Census activities, as voluntary partners who are trusted voices within their organizations and communities, and who can encourage everyone to take part in the 2010 count.
As we kick things off in Tulsa, our goal is to remind Tulsans that the U.S. Census is more than counting people. The population census is the basis of apportioning everything from seats in Congress to federal aid for local services and infrastructure. Funding for highways, school lunch programs, Medicare and Medicaid and other crucial projects and programs worth $300 billion a year are based on census data.
Next week, local census workers will begin a canvassing operation to verify home addresses through-out the city, a critically important first step in assuring that every housing unit receives a census questionnaire in March 2010. Census workers will never ask for bank or social security information. All collected census information, including addresses, are confidential and protected by law.
The Census and the future of our community are in our hands. Let's encourage everyone to stand up and be counted!
Sincerely,
Mayor Kathy Taylor
Looking for Citizens to Serve
The City of Tulsa has openings on several authorities, boards and commissions that are waiting for citizens to volunteer their services to the community. Mayor Kathy Taylor and the City Council rely on these volunteer citizen groups for thoughtful advice to create policies and develop programs.
Individuals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply to serve on these boards. Applicants for all Mayor-appointed positions must be Tulsa residents. Some boards have additional requirements.

Getting Rid of
Household Chemical
Many household cleaning products, paints and lawn chemicals contain hazardous pollutants and should be disposed of carefully, not just in the trash, gutter or drain.
One way to ensure proper disposal of household chemicals is to take them to the Household Pollutant Collection Event on Saturday and Sunday, April 4 – 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tulsa Fairgrounds near 15th Street and Yale Avenue. Enter the fairgrounds from 15th Street at Gate 7.
Enjoy a Spring Sampler
at the PAC
Theatre fans are going to love April at the PAC. Three plays will be presented this month, along with a sampling of dance, opera and music.
Theatre Tulsa finishes its run of the comedy Up the Down Staircase, April 2 – 4. This collaboration between Clark Theatre and Theatre Tulsa is about a young English teacher's experiences at a new job. Challenges with the administration, her students and a budding romance create comic moments and heartbreak in a play based on the book by Bel Kaufman.
