Tulsa residents with utility accounts can request a voucher to recycle a television set free of charge, thanks to a program funded by the Tulsa Authority for the Recovery of Energy (TARE).
To participate, call 596-9777 and request a recycling voucher. You must provide your city of Tulsa utility account number when making this request. The voucher will then be mailed to you and should be taken with your television set to one of the participating electronics recycling locations.
Participating locations include the Earth E Cycle sites at 3112-B East Pine and 4530 South Sheridan Road in Tulsa; or the Natural Evolution site, at 5719 East 13th Street in Tulsa.
One voucher is available per Tulsa household. Additional televisions may be recycled at a cost of $15 per set.
The program began April 20 and will continue through June 30, 2009.
A typical television with a cathode ray tube contains specialized glass with lead components. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the glass may have a lead content of up to 25 percent, totaling four (4) pounds of lead. In addition, the television contains steel, copper, plastics and other materials that can be recovered and reused by manufacturers.
