Lost and Found Animals

If you are missing a pet...

Please come to the Tulsa Animal Welfare Services/shelter in person.  We keep lost pets for three business days before allowing them to be adopted or accepted by rescue organizations. Bringing photographs of your pet will help. We can offer you advice on finding your lost pet as well as preventing pet loss.

Here are a few things you should do before you come to Tulsa Animal Welfare:

First, search your property. Look in every nook and cranny, even the tiniest spaces. Look behind and under appliances, stoves, water heaters, and furniture. Check in closets, cabinets, drains, pipes, crawl spaces, sheds and barns.

Second, walk the neighborhood, and talk to everyone, leaving your phone number. Have descriptions of your pet with you to leave behind. Put up many flyers in your neighborhood, at local veterinarian offices and grocery stores. Post one on your car window. The more people who know you are missing a pet, the more likely you are to find him.

Third, as you search, call your pet's name, and squeak its favorite toy as a familiar noise. Use a dog whistle, which makes an ultrasonic sound, or an audible sound. This will attract either a dog or cat (the audible sound setting will carry the sound farther.)

Remember, don't search for your pet, or respond to calls from people who have seen or may "have" your pet by yourself. Always take a friend or relative with you to search whether during the day or the night.

If you have found a pet...

Please phone in a report or bring the animal to the shelter, so his owner has a better chance of finding him again. We keep stray pets for a minimum of three business days before allowing them to be adopted into a new home, so that the owner has a chance to contact us. You may also wish to phone in a report to the Humane Society of Tulsa at 495-3647 or visit tulsapets.com. In addition to sheltering and adopting stray pets, these organizations often receive phone calls from owners looking for lost pets. They may be able to help.

To claim a lost pet...

If your pet was not wearing an ID tag and is not microchipped, please bring proof of ownership to the shelter. Proof of ownership may be provided in the form of photos, bill of sale or vet records. At the time you claim your pet, you can expect to pay fees for the animal's care while in the shelter.

Unfortunately, we cannot hold pets indefinitely due to the number of animals in need. We offer lost pets for adoption and to rescue organizations after three business days.
