City Services

Salt and Sand spreader
Winter Preparedness

The City clears ice and snow from Tulsa's arterial (main) streets. It also clears ice and snow from streets around hospitals and schools. The City has the following resources available to combat snow and ice:

  • 51 truck-mounted sand-salt spreaders
  • 24 truck-mounted snow plows
  • 2 motor graders for use as plows
  • 1 truck-mounted liquid de-icer spraying units
  • 110 employees

The spreaders are assigned to 35 specific routes totaling 1,500 lane-miles. Spreading and plowing routes are prioritized based on traffic counts. Expressways, arterials and streets around hospitals are on the highest-priority routes. Additional arterials, streets around schools, and secondary arterials in residential neighborhoods are the second-highest priority. Once the main streets are cleared and conditions permit, selected residential streets are treated based upon conditions and special circumstances.
