The 22-member Complete Our Streets Panel submitted its recommendations to Mayor Kathy Taylor and the City Council at the December 4 Council Committee meeting. Co-chaired by Sharon King Davis and Dewey Bartlett Jr., the panel challenged Tulsa to take bold action to correct decades of underfunded street maintenance. This neglect has resulted in a general decline of the streets' surface quality and capacity to handle increased traffic due to growth and development.
With "the best interest of our City in (their) minds and hearts," the panel conducted "a fast paced, 60-day endeavor ... (during which they) studied information, heard from citizens, interviewed experienced professionals, and searched past and present practices in order to understand about the design, construction and financing of the City streets."
The Complete Our Streets panel's report included recommendations from each of its three committees: Smart Urban Design - chaired by Patty Eaton, Contracting - chaired by Sharon King Davis, and Finance - chaired by Dewey Bartlett Jr. The panel saw their mission as helping Tulsans realize that they have "a rare opportunity to enhance our transportation system, not only with smooth pavement and wider streets, but with visually attractive streets that provide several travel choices, an enhanced environment and more compact and focused growth."
