Many, many employees of the City of Tulsa deserve extra thanks for their efforts during this past week’s emergency: the Tulsa Police Department whose officers worked overtime to patrol darkened streets; the Tulsa Fire Department whose firefighters not only handled fire and medical response, but also organized teams of volunteers; EMSA and the Medical Emergency Response Center which stayed in touch with hospitals and responded to high call volumes; the Mayor’s Action Center which extended its hours and worked on the weekend; American Red Cross, Community Service Council and countless others. Public Works employees continue to work 12-hour shifts to clear Tulsa’s streets of downed trees and debris, to keep safe drinking water flowing into our homes and to get traffic signals back in operation.
The staff at the Mayor’s Action Center, which handled as many as 591 calls per employee per day during the storm, and the Communications Department, which kept local media abreast of changing situations, and the other City departments which support Police, Fire and Public Works, all pulled together this week to help Tulsans in a time of need. Many of those employees, just like the population in general, worked while their own homes were dark and growing colder without power.
As your Mayor, I am proud to serve a city where businesses step forward in a time of need, where government agencies work hand-in-hand to overcome a crisis, and where citizens help one another when the need arises.
The work isn’t over yet. But I’m confident that Tulsa will not only be back to normal, soon, but that it will be even better than before. Please keep up the good work!
