Greetings!
This weekend we observe Memorial Day, to honor those who fought foreign wars and have bravely given their lives to their country. It is a time for remembering and for reflection on the values and freedom we enjoy in the United States of America.
This week also brought victory to David Cook, a Tulsa musician who won the internationally televised American Idol competition. A native of Missouri, David came to Tulsa in search of a gig and landed American Idol. I believe Tulsa can claim some credit for his success because we are a city known for our enterprising spirit and a community where we nurture, embrace and cultivate great young talent. It was fun to watch and cheer David on over the last several weeks. On September 13, we will get the chance to see him with the Top 10 from this most recent competition as part of the "American Idols Live" tour stop at the BOK Center.
If you are spending the holiday weekend in Tulsa – one of the Top 5 most livable communities in the U.S. – you can catch a Drillers home game Friday night; enjoy the arts and beautiful grounds of the Philbrook and view the Gilcrease '08 Rendevous exhibition, featuring the art of Tim Shinabarger, attend the OK Greenfest concert at the Cains Ballroom Saturday night, or treat yourself to evening theatrical performances of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night's Dream at the City of Tulsa's Performing Arts Center. These are all great reasons to believe in Tulsa!
Have a fun and a safe holiday.
Sincerely,
Kathy Taylor,
Mayor

Make a Splash at
Your Local City Pool
The City of Tulsa will open nine pools - free of charge - beginning June 1 for kids and adults to enjoy throughout the summer. A tenth pool, located at Manion Park and operated through a partnership with Miller Swim School, will be open and a fee for admittance will be charged.
Last year, the City opened eight pools free to the public. This year, through generous private donations offered by Tulsans, the City was able to increase the number to 10 - all of the City pools that are in operable condition.
Cooling Your House Efficiently Helps Save Energy, Money
Things are heating up outside, and it’s time to think about the air conditioning unit you’ll be relying on in the coming months. This week’s tip focuses on ways to Reduce Energy Used for Air Conditioning.
To cool your house efficiently, your air conditioner unit has to be cool, so keep it in the shade. An air conditioner exposed to direct sunlight will use up to 5 percent more energy than a shaded one. Also, air conditioner units located on the north side of the house generally use less energy than those on the south or west sides where it's sunny. If your air conditioner unit is already in the sun, you can build a simple wooden shade screen for it, but don't block the air flow.
