Back-to-School BeGreen Tip

It’s time to head back to school, and that means money woes for many college students. And what’s more, it’s tough to remember to “think green” when you’re on a budget.

College students have plenty to worry about – but luckily, there are a few easy ways you can be green without breaking the bank. These suggestions from thegreenguide.com are kind to the environment and to your wallet:

In the Kitchen

  • Cook! It’s the easiest way to save money, plus it keeps non-recyclable containers and extra packaging out of the landfills.
  • Try your local farmer’s market before you shop at a supermarket. Buying locally means the produce is often cheaper, fresher, and of better quality.
  • Plan ahead to avoid overbuying, and store your food properly so it lasts longer. Don’t add to the estimated 96 billion pounds of food Americans throw away every year.

In the Laundry Room

  • Buy an inexpensive drying rack or use a clothesline instead of the dryer. You’ll save money and reduce your carbon footprint.
  • Be earth-friendly by trying out organic laundry detergents.
  • Buy in bulk to save money and packaging, and use less detergent than the manufacturer recommends (there should only be a few bubbles in your machine’s water—if you see suds, you’re using too much).
  • Save water by using a front-loading machine if you can, and make sure your washer is set to the right settings for the size of load you have.

In the Closet

  • Avoid buying new whenever possible. There are great alternatives to retail stores: try vintage, consignment, second-hand, and online stores.
  • Organize clothing swaps with your friends to get “new” clothes for free!
  • Keep on the lookout for brands that have organic lines. More and more companies are going green, which is great news for you, too!
