Greetings,
The entertainers for the final Neighborfest Tulsa Talents competition have been selected and are coming to Veterans Park, 1875 S. Boulder Ave., on Tuesday, Aug. 5 for the final Neighborfest of the summer!
The seven acts selected to perform will take the stage at Veterans Park, 18th & Boulder, and compete for a $500 prize donated by Borden Dairy. Neighborfest is held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Throughout the summer, we have been entertained by singers, dancers, instrumentalists and performers of all kinds at the Neighborfests held in City parks. Now it is time for them to really shine and earn their prize. I assure you this will be a fun night for all of the family, so join us for the grand finale. Borden will again serve ice cream bars and Pepsi will donate free soft drinks for all.
This week, more than 100 kids remembered to flush when we kicked off the BOK Center ceremonies with the Super Flush – a traditional day for opening arenas and events centers where the plumbing is tested. The kids were excited to be a part of the ceremony and they will have another chance to see the events center Saturday, August 30 when we will cut the ribbon, dedicate the building and have an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All the BOK events are listed online.
Stay tuned for more BOK events!
Sincerely,
Kathy Taylor
Mayor
Tulsa Talents Finalists and More At the All-City Neighborfest
Seven acts ranging from solo and duet singers to dance troupes will entertain the crowd in the final round of “Tulsa Talents” competition, Tuesday, Aug. 5 at the final Neighborfest of the 2008 season.
Mayor Kathy Taylor and the Tulsa City Council welcome all Tulsans to the final citywide Neighborfest at Veteran’s Park, 1875 S. Boulder Ave., from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday to meet neighbors and friends and their elected city officials.
The Tulsa Talents competition, hosted by noted Tulsa musician and former NBA, University of Oklahoma and Olympic basketball standout Wayman Tisdale, drew performers of many kinds to compete at the first eight Neighborfests this summer. Judges at each event rated the acts and the top acts are invited back to perform at the final Veterans Park Neighborfest where the winner will receive $500 donated by Borden Dairy, one of the Neighborfest sponsors.
Water Conservation:
Outside Your Home
There are many ways that you can reduce the amount of water you use outside and yet still keep your lawn and garden plants green during a hot summer. Here are a few tips:
Use a Drip Hose
Sprinklers may be a fun makeshift water park for the kids, but the amount of water loss is both expensive and damaging for the environment. Choose drip hoses to irrigate your gardens. Drip hoses work by allowing water to slowly seep out of small holes that target the roots of the plants - where they actually need the water - as opposed to the leaves, flowers, sidewalk, and all passing cars on the street.
Kids Join in "Super Flush"
At the BOK Center
Last week, 200 Tulsa area kids ages 3 through 17 went on a flushing splurge in the 350 toilets and urinals at the soon-to-open BOK Center. In 90-and 30-second intervals, restroom “squads” darted around like tennis balls to simultaneously flush all stalls in an imitation of a real-life intermission scenario.
The “Super Flush,” now a tradition for arenas and event centers around the country, is also a key practical test, and the BOK Center’s plumbing passed it with flying colors. Now it’s clear: the arena’s visitors will be able to enjoy not only its five-star concerts, but its world-class facilities as well.
Skelly Early Childhood
Center's Grand Opening
Mayor Kathy Taylor and Councilor Bill Martinson spoke at last Thursday’s grand opening of the Skelly Early Childhood Educational Center. The new center will prepare more than 100 preschool-age children for elementary school.
Community Action Project (CAP) of Tulsa County in partnership with Family & Children’s Services operates the new center, located at 8811 E. 31st St., and is geared toward helping low-income families achieve economic success.
The center will provide 12 classrooms to serve more than 100 young children, birth through four years of age. Children enrolled in CAP’s program will start their first day of class in the new facility on August 11.
New Magical Acts
Announced at BOK Center
Thinking about premier, internationally sought entertainment? Think Tulsa. Think Cirque du Soleil? Think the new BOK Center.
The world-famous circus will appear at the arena December 10 – 14, 2008, performing its signature show Saltimbanco, which is described as a celebration of life. The show focuses on a mixture of cultures in cities and learning to live and work together despite the many differences. Tickets go on sale August 18.
Next, Harlem Globetrotters will come to the BOK Center on January 3 – 4, 2008, touring for its 89th consecutive season. The Globetrotters have played in 119 countries, showing a 98 percent winning rate.
Team Taylor in
Training Update
For the past five months, students from McLain High School and Gilcrease Middle School have been training for the Tulsa Run on October 25 as part of the Mayor’s Fitness Challenge and are right on target with their fitness goals.
Dubbed, “Team Taylor in Training” the kids have participated in several 5k runs this year and most recently joined Mayor Kathy Taylor for the Mohawk 5000. All 12 students finished the 5k and were then treated to breakfast at the Blue Dome Diner.
Mayor Taylor said, “The kids are having fun and are training three times a week with their trainer, Kathy Hoover from Runner’s World. They’re all showing more confidence in themselves and are doing a great job – they inspire me to keep going with my own training!”
