Arson is an intentionally set fire that affects everyone. Firefighters endanger their lives fighting fires as well as the lives of citizens while enroute to emergency scenes. The loss of life, property, and rising costs of protection affects all of us.

Tulsa Firefighters will respond to over 46,000 emergency incidents in 2005. Fire Investigators will examine over 500 fire scenes. The City of Tulsa experiences approximately $7 million in arson fire loss annually.

Motives for Arson are often recognized as:

1) Vandalism
2) Excitement/ Attention seeking
3) Revenge/ Spite
4) Crime Concealment
5) Profit
6) Extremist/ Terrorism

Approximately 53% of Arsons are caused by juveniles under the age of 18. 'Operation Firesafe' is a Tulsa Fire Department program to assist and address juvenile fire-setting.

Arson is a felony crime. Oklahoma statutes list 5 degrees of arson. Tulsa Fire Investigators are certified peace officers and have police powers as well as various Fire Investigative certifications. TFD Investigators share and participate in an active Arson Task Force, which include assistance from ATFE (Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosions) and other cooperating agencies.
