Renovations - Implementing the Parks Master Plan

Starting in February, 2012, implementation of the Parks
Master Plan will commence with major renovations occuring in nine
city parks.
Completed earlier this
year and with citizen input, three of the top recommendations
were:
- updating parks and facilities to address changing needs and
desires within the community,
- updating non-performing obsolete park facilities with modern
urban amenities and
- ensuring access for all citizens to quality park
amenities.
Per the recommendations of the Parks Master Plan, nine outdated
parks will be updated, including: Turner, Springdale, Heller,
Franklin, Clark, Manion, Zeigler, Hill and Maxwell.

Other Ongoing Projects
Renovation projects include water playgrounds, sports court
resurfacing, and Zoo renovations. Renovations List
As of February 28, 2010, approximately $16.1 million is
available to be spent on voter/Council authorized Park projects.
This is comprised of $1.1 million from the 2001 Sales Tax, $5.8
million from the 2006 Advance Funded Sales Tax, and $9.2 million
from the 2006 Extended Sales Tax. Approximately $3.5 million of
that amount is allocated to improvements at the City's 21
recreation centers. All of the $16.1 million is designated to be
spent on approved projects. An additional $5.3 million is scheduled
to be appropriated in FY's 11-13 from future revenue collections
from voter/Council authorized Parks projects from the 2006 Extended
Sales Tax Program. All of the funds are needed to implement the
projects as promised to the voters during the educational
campaigns.

Woodward Park
Woodward Park is currently undergoing some tree
removal to combat an erosion problem by the pond which is a problem
with the park landscape, and a major safety concern. Resolving the
erosion will include planting some new trees and azaleas.
After many months, the new playground at Florence Park is
play-ready! Whiteside Playground is completed, and an
additional Water Playground at Whiteside should break ground
soon.
This is just some of the many Park Renovations.
Mohawk Soccer Fields
The 17-field soccer area at Mohawk Park, currently under
construction, will include lighted and non-lighted fields,
Shelters, restrooms, landscaping and concessions. Located at 56th
Street North and H-75, the soccer fields should be completed and
