Just as it is time to spruce up your house for some spring and summer fun, it’s also a good time to clean up the entire city after an unusually cold winter and a few days of strong winds in March.
The entire month of April is dedicated to Operation Clean Sweep. It’s a time when Tulsans, either alone or teaming up with neighbors, churches, school leaders, and civic groups, can spend at least 60 minutes this month to clean up Tulsa. We have taken care of most of the storm debris across the city, but much remains in our parks and blowing trash has littered the sides of our city streets and highways.
Working with City volunteers and the Metropolitan Environmental Trust, I will be kicking off this month-long clean up this Saturday, April 5, at Nathan Hale High School, 6960 East 21st Street. If you want to join me, check in at the high school circle drive off 21st Street at 9 a.m. to get your bags and gloves. If you want to want work in another area of the city, you can pick up supplies – bags and gloves – at community centers across the city all month. Read this week’s story for more information.
The Mayor’s Entrepreneurial Spirit Award competition kicks off April 2 at the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame. Spirit Bank has again pledged cash to the top three businesses. We will announce more details on how to submit a business executive summary and be considered for the next step, as well as how to submit a full business plan and receive some one-on-one mentoring assistance from experienced Tulsa executives. The Spirit awards and resources are available to businesses who submit their business plans. Prizes will total $100,000 this year. The winners will be announced in the fall during Entrepreneurship Week, which will be celebrated all over the globe.
Whether it’s cleaning up the community or submitting your business idea, get engaged and help us make life better in Tulsa!
Sincerely,
Kathy Taylor
Mayor

Municipal Courts Offers Opportunity for Students
You may have heard the phrase "order in the court," but what about "honor in the court?" Yes, judges are referred to as “your honor,” but a new youth program provides high school honor students a chance to sit next to the judge for a day in court.
This mentoring program is designed to educate the youth leadership of tomorrow by providing first-hand observation of actual court cases from a unique perspective.

Mayor Taylor Celebrates
Arbor Day with Students
Mayor Taylor got a little help from Miss Maloy’s class at Roosevelt Elementary during a tree planting event last Friday held in honor of Arbor Day. Taylor led the 1 p.m. celebration at Tulsa’s oldest park, Owen Park.
Although the United States has celebrated Arbor Day for more than 130 years, Arbor Day’s importance became even more significant this year as Tulsans continue to recover from the December 2007 ice storm. The ice storm destroyed or severely damaged tens of thousands of trees in the Tulsa area, including thousands of trees in most of Tulsa’s 125 City parks.
