Tell Us What You Think: Parks Survey Online

Beginning this week, all Tulsans interested in those special places, from community centers and splash pads to the Heller Theater to the Oxley Nature Center and Tulsa Zoo, are invited to take part in a brief survey about our parks and recreation facilities.

Tulsa Transit Offers 50-Cent Fridays

Friday bus rides on Tulsa Transit now cost only 50 cents, thanks to Lafarge and their sponsorship during the 2009 Ozone Alert season. The program began May 15 and will continue through August 28.

The program is one way to encourage Tulsa area residents to ride the bus during the Ozone Alert season.

Change a Child's Life Forever

Last week, Mayor Kathy Taylor, joined by Dr. Barry Epperley, artistic director and conductor for TCC's Signature Symphony, kicked off a brand-new program, entitled "Mentoring to the Max with Music" at Eugene Field Elementary.

"Our drop-out rates for Tulsa area schools are higher than surrounding districts," said Mayor Taylor, "so we must provide Tulsa kids with positive experiences to help them stay in school and become successful in life. Mentoring has been proven to reduce crime, help kids miss fewer days of school and improve their grades. Mentoring can bring out the 'best' in a child and literally change their life forever."

Gear Up for Beach Bash

Looking for a fun way to cool off? Tulsa Park's "Beach Bash" returns to McClure Park on Saturday, May 30 from 12 to 3:00 p.m. for a swimming good time - and the public is invited!

Designed to celebrate the opening of city pools, "Beach Bash" offers great music and fun games for an afternoon of cooling down and starting the summer with a splash. Located at 7th and Memorial Drive, the McClure Park Pool is an Olympic-size pool with a giant water slide. Admission will be free.

Celebrating Public Works This Week

Mayor Kathy Taylor has proclaimed this week, through May 23, as National Public Works Week in the city of Tulsa, recognizing that public works services provided in our community are an integral part of citizens' everyday lives.

"Our community's health, safety and comfort greatly depend on public works services," Mayor Taylor said. "We rely on the efforts and skill of our Public Works Department in planning, design, construction and operation of facilities to serve us and generations to come."

Even when budgets are stretched thin, Tulsa's Public Works employees continue to deliver vital services to Tulsa residents. These include water, sewer and refuse, storm water drainage, as well as maintenance of streets and public facilities including parks, Tulsa Zoo, Tulsa Performing Arts Center, and City Hall at One Technology Center.

City's Memorial Day Schedule

City of Tulsa offices will be closed on Monday, May 25, for Memorial Day.

Also on Monday, residential trash service will not operate in the city of Tulsa. Customers whose trash is picked up twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays should put all accumulated trash at the curb for pickup on Thursday, May 28.

Customers whose trash is picked up once a week will follow their normal schedule because Monday is not a usual service day.

Mayor Kathy Taylor

Greetings,

Next Monday is a holiday - Memorial Day is a time for us to remember and commemorate the men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces and gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense of this great Nation. The United States Congress, by Public Law 106-579, has designated the minute beginning at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day as a time for all Americans to observe the National Moment of Remembrance.

Please join me on Memorial Day and pause for a moment to honor those who paid the ultimate price for us and their families. Freedom comes at a great sacrifice, and it is our duty as Americans to never forget those who have given their life for our country.

Sincerely,
Kathy Taylor
Mayor
