Tulsa's Olympic Day Celebration

Last Friday, Victoria Bartlett, a spokesperson for the Mayor's Tulsa Million Miles initiative was joined by Shane Hamman, an Olympian in weightlifting for Olympic Day at the Saint Francis HealthZone.

Shane competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics and was an announcer at the 2008 Beijing Olympics for NBC.

Mrs. Bartlett encouraged summer day camp kids to take care of their bodies and said, "It's important to build your body the right way with fruits, grains, vegetables, meat, cheese and milk, instead of pop tarts, soda pop and chicken nuggets. Getting the right kinds of food and exercise will help you live a long and healthy life."

Airport Ambassadors Celebrate 15 Years of Service

Today, there are more than 130 RSVP Airport Ambassadors providing volunteer service at Tulsa International Airport. They work four-hour shifts, staffing three information desks from 6 a.m. - 7 p.m.

In addition to providing an occasional page, they answer four phone lines and hundreds of face-to-face questions every day. The Airport Ambassadors leave a personal impression with airport visitors by offering a friendly smile, reliable information, and heartfelt service.

The City of Tulsa is Looking for Citizens to Serve

Do your part in helping us move Tulsa forward by volunteering to serve as a member of an Authority, Board or Commission. The City of Tulsa has dozens of citizen committees that cover a wide range of topics and appeal to a variety of interests. Both the City Council and Mayor Dewey Bartlett rely on these citizen groups to provide thoughtful advice regarding policy and program development.

Those wishing to serve must be a Tulsa resident. Some boards have additional requirements. Information about each of the Authorities, Boards or Commissions, as well as an application for completion which is needed to be considered for approval is located online.

Nearly $80 Million of Street Work in Progress

Tulsa currently is facing a "perfect storm" of street construction. Street work under way right now includes projects from the 2005 General Obligation Bond Issue, the 2006 Third Penny Sales Tax extension, and the 2008 General Obligation Bond Issue devoted entirely to streets.

Construction of some of these projects has begun sooner than anticipated, due to the immediate availability of federal funding through the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009.

City of Tulsa and TPS Partner for Campus Policing

Mayor Dewey Bartlett and Tulsa Public Schools Superintendant, Dr. Keith Ballard announced today that the City of Tulsa and Tulsa Public Schools will enter into a memorandum of understanding which will allow Tulsa Public Schools Campus Police to issue citations on school grounds, streets, roads, alleys and all properties adjacent to schools.

Currently, only the Tulsa Police Department had the authority to issue citations. All tickets and materials will be provided by the City of Tulsa and all tickets issued will be processed and arbitrated by the city's municipal courts. The City will also provide 50 crossing guard site locations for the upcoming school year.

Mayor Dewey Bartlett

Greetings,

A victory for Tulsa residents and property owners was achieved last week at City Hall when three abatement ordinance changes were approved, strengthening the City's ability to clean up neglected and dilapidated abandoned properties.

Such properties exist throughout the city and can drag down values of neighboring homes and businesses, create eyesores and, in some cases, attract criminal activity and even foster health and public safety problems.

Thanks goes to the staff in the Working in Neighborhoods Department for diligently working within the community to finalize ordinances. City Councilors voted unanimously in favor of the rules. More information about these City ordinance changes can be viewed online.

Best regards,
Dewey Bartlett
Mayor
