Park Master Plan Now Online
The new Tulsa Park Department Master Plan is finished and now
available for viewing on the City of Tulsa Web site. This is the first such
planning document created for Tulsa Parks in over 30 years.
A public meeting has been set for 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 30 at
Central Center at Centennial Park to review the contents of the new
plan.
The Executive Summary of the Master Plan was posted on the City
of Tulsa Web site in late January as planners finalized the
complete plan document.
Tulsa selected park planners from GreenPlay LLC, Broomfield, CO,
in the fall of 2008, to create the new Master Plan. Preliminary
work began in February 2009 with a series of Tulsa focus groups.
Members of the focus groups provided the planners with input about
both the Park System and the recreation programming available at
Tulsa Parks. In addition, an online survey was available for anyone
who wanted to participate in the planning process. More than 1,300
Tulsans participated.
The Tulsa park system includes 6,000 acres of green space, as
well as a 65-acre zoo, two nature centers, a Garden Center, 197
sports fields, 83 playgrounds, 28 water playgrounds, 69 picnic
shelters, hiking and biking trails and dog parks, plus other
amenities, including pools and community centers.
Private donations made to Park Friends through the Tulsa
Community Foundation funded the new Tulsa Parks Master Plan. Margie
Warren and Jamie Zinc served as co-chairs of the Parks Master Plan
Task Force.
