Social Innovation Programs Coming to Tulsa

The request for proposals for three anti-poverty programs that will be offered in Tulsa were posted online this week through the New York City's Center for Economic Opportunity.

Funding from the Social Innovation Fund, an initiative enacted under the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, will be matched locally by the Tulsa Community Foundation. The funding was granted to the New York Center (NYC) for Economic Opportunity and the Mayor's Fund to Advance NYC, which in turn selected eight cities, including Tulsa, to replicate successful programs already established in New York City to help the working poor and unemployed.

Mayor Bartlett Thanks Citizen Volunteers

Last week Mayor Bartlett hosted a volunteer appreciation lunch in accordance with 'Make a Difference Day', to thank the many citizen volunteers who donated their time to help beautify Tulsa.

During the past year, Tulsans donated their time by mowing, removing graffiti, picking up trash and gardening. At the event, Mayor Bartlett provided each individual and organization a certificate of appreciation for their efforts in keeping the City's parks and rights-of-ways maintained. The lunch for volunteers was sponsored by the Tulsa Beautification Foundation.

Mayor Dewey Bartlett

Greetings,

Yesterday I attended the dedication of the John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park in the historic Greenwood District. During the dedication we were able to honor the victims from the 1921 Race Riot and honor the memory of the late Dr. John Hope Franklin.

Dr. Franklin, a nationally known historian was an extraordinary man who survived the 1921 Race Riot and then went on to inspire others to fight bigotry and racism around the country. Dr. Franklin was a graduate from Booker T. Washington in Tulsa and although living on the East coast for most of his adult life, considered Tulsa home.

Inside the walls of the John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park stand statues, plaques and monuments depicting the many issues that Dr. Franklin spoke so passionately about. The park is a symbol of not only Tulsa's past, but our bright future. It is a place where our community can meet and greet each other and build a bridge of reconciliation within our city.

I urge each of you to visit the John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park and remember the vision of Dr. Franklin, so that our children and grandchildren can live, work and play together as one community and one Tulsa. The park is open daily 10 a.m. to dusk.

Best regards,
Dewey Bartlett
Mayor
