Mayor Encourages Neighbors to Pay It Forward

Mayor Dewey Bartlett is calling on Tulsans to "pay it forward" in their neighborhoods during the month of October, which he also proclaimed as Good Neighbor Month in Tulsa.

The City of Tulsa Working in Neighborhoods Department is a sponsor and is working with neighborhoods leaders, church and civic groups across the city to promote the month by encouraging them to help their neighbors.

Help the Tulsa Fire Department Earn $10,000

The Tulsa Fire Department (TFD) is in the running for a $10,000 pledge through the Liberty Mutual BeFireSmart Program. By taking a quick 10 question fire safety and fire prevention quiz, you can help the TFD earn credit toward the $10,000 prize.

If TFD is among one of two large fire departments to receive the top prize, they will use the money to purchase smoke detectors for Project Life and carbon monoxide alarms for senior citizens.

Support our TFD by taking the Fire Safety Pledge Quiz, now through October 31.

Animal Shelter in the Running for Pepsi Funding

Tulsa Animal Welfare (TAW) is a front runner in the Pepsi Refresh funding contest and the lucky winner will receive $25,000! The final voting tally for the top project closes October 31, so visit the Web site to register and vote for TAW every day.

If TAW receives enough online votes, $25,000 in funds would be used to build a new, larger surgical suite, providing additional and updated equipment.

New Addition Planned for Gilcrease Museum

The public-private partnership between the City of Tulsa and University of Tulsa for Gilcrease Museum is paying dividends. Although the City of Tulsa still owns the museum, the University of Tulsa has taken over management of the institution.

Gilcrease Museum continues to develop into much more than an art museum. Through guidance from the University of Tulsa, the museum's role in research and education is growing. Mayor Dewey Bartlett's recent announcement of a future 25,000-square-foot addition, to be called the Helmerich Research Center and Gilcrease National Archive, confirms this new direction for the museum.

Mayor Dewey Bartlett

Greetings,

At the Oklahoma Municipal League Conference last week in Oklahoma City, I had the opportunity to present information on the revenue task force on which I serve, along with Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett.

The presentation and questions quickly turned to the City of Tulsa's efforts to persuade the state legislature to allow municipalities to collect sales taxes on their own. The laws were recently changed to require that all municipalities continue to use the Oklahoma Tax Commission, which is underfunded and understaffed.

We believe we are losing millions in uncollected sales tax revenues - money that would go into our general fund to maintain our streets, keep fire and police departments staffed, administer grants, care for parks and neighborhoods and a multitude of other activities. Tulsa's portion of the 8.517 cents collected in Tulsa County is 3 cents, while Tulsa County receives 1.017 cents and 4.5 cents goes to the state.

To the state legislature's credit, they are beginning to recognize the need to increase funding to the agency and the two gubernatorial candidates are listening to their city leader's concerns. We are continuing to look at our options and pursue the right to collect our own revenues using a third-party firm. We'll see if our efforts will pay off.

Best regards,
Dewey Bartlett
