Did you know nearly half of the 2,000 calls answered daily by
the 911 Center aren't even for emergencies? People often call 911
because they are unfamiliar with the non-emergency phone
numbers.
Some examples of non-emergency calls include: injured animals,
dead animal pick-up, leash laws, legal questions, obtaining
official police reports, jail-related questions, status of police
investigations and other investigation-related questions, and
changing smoke detector batteries, to name just a few.
Also, with the mandatory 918 area code dialing in place, people
sometimes call 911 by mistake and hang up. This creates an issue
because the 911 dispatcher has to call the number back and make
sure the caller isn't experiencing a true emergency. If the caller
doesn't answer, then officers will be sent to the location to check
and see if there's a problem.
Ken White, 911 Center operations manager, explains, "Citizens
need to stay on the line and tell the 911 dispatcher that the call
was made by accident. That way the 911 line won't be tied up by
non-emergency calls, which takes away from callers who are
experiencing life-threatening emergencies."
