When the 2007 ice storm froze Tulsa, thousands of families were without power, warmth, and food.

One of those families was the Darling family who reached out for help at the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma. On Halloween Day I invited them to a press conference at City Hall to share their story. It is a story that hundreds of Tulsa families are familiar with today.

According to the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, one in five Oklahoma children is at risk of going to bed hungry every night - this is a statistic that must be addressed. That's why my office has partnered with Governor Mary Fallin's "Feeding Oklahoma Food Drive," now through Nov. 22 to help fight hunger in our state.

This important initiative can make a difference in our community and throughout our great state by helping those experiencing extreme hardships due to the economy.

We are holding our own food drive here at City Hall and I am challenging corporations, churches and families in our community to do the same. By joining together we can help put food on the table for families who don't have the money to buy groceries.

We must let families, just like the Darling family, know that there is help. And perhaps one day, those in need, will be in a position to help others. Nancy Darling says that she and her five children quickly got back on their feet and have been "trick or treating" for canned goods instead of candy for several years. Nancy said, "It was the kids' idea and I am so proud of them."

May we all learn from this great Tulsa family the value of giving back to the community and help fight hunger, all year long for it's the right thing to do.

Best regards,
Dewey Bartlett
Mayor of Tulsa
