TFD Trains Largest Academy Class in City's History
Training began this week for 50 cadets in one of the largest
fire academies in Tulsa's history. Due to budget reductions and the
national recession, the Fire Department has not held a training
academy in two years. Forty-six of the fire recruits in the new
academy will be funded for two years by a $4.2 million grant
through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and four are being
funded through city funds. Members of the academy will go through a
five-month training period, then graduate this fall.
Currently, the Fire Department has 627 firefighters and another
fire academy for 16 is included in the proposed FY12 budget.
