North Tulsa Sports Complex in Phase I
Tulsa's Mohawk Park area will soon be transforming 320 acres
into the North Tulsa Sports Complex, located at 56th Street North
and U.S. 75. The project is in the first phase of construction with
nearly 25 percent complete. The completed sports complex is
expected to be fully operational by the fall of 2012 and will
accommodate a 26-field tournament soccer facility, a new
state-of-the-art skateboard park, which is currently in use, and a
future BMX bicycle track.
The first phase, which began in March 2011 will include the
construction of 10 full-size, lighted fields and seven practice
fields; a rest room; locker room and concession building; picnic
tables; roads; parking and shade structures.
The funding for the first phase is allocated as $5.2 million
from Vision 2025; $3.8 million 2006 sales tax; and $13,000 in Park
Friends donations. Also included was $750,000 from the 2001 sales
tax for site improvements.
Mayor Bartlett said, "Our brand-new sports complex will be an
exciting addition to North Tulsa that will serve both high school
and college tournaments, as well as a possible NCAA Tournament. We
have the opportunity to attract a lot of people and make Tulsa the
place to be for great sporting events."
Tulsa Park and Recreation Department board Chairwoman Dale
McNamara has said the soccer complex will fit with the rest of
Mohawk Park and the surrounding area, which includes two golf
courses, the Oxley Nature Center and the Tulsa Zoo.
