Proposed Towing Ordinance Change for Uninsured Motorists
Mayor Bartlett and Police Chief Chuck Jordan announced this week
that they will submit a change in the city's towing ordinance to
give the Tulsa Police Department more flexibility in towing
vehicles owned by uninsured motorists.
Although Oklahoma law states that uninsured vehicles can be
towed, Tulsa does not have a similar ordinance that gives the
authority for the Tulsa Police Department (TPD) to tow uninsured
vehicles. As it currently stands, if an insured motorist is in an
accident with an uninsured motorist, the uninsured motorist can
drive away. In 2010, TPD pulled over 17,839 motorists without
insurance and through August of 2011, TPD pulled over 12,953
uninsured motorists.
The proposed change in the city ordinance will be submitted to
the Tulsa City Council next week for their approval. This change in
the ordinance not only protects the citizens who are abiding by the
law, but gives a reminder to all motorists that you must keep proof
of insurance in your vehicle at all times.
