Winners of TPS/COT Sustainable Energy Essay Contest Announced!

Adriana Rodriguez of Hamilton Middle School has won the Sustainable Energy Essay Contest, held by Tulsa Public Schools and the City of Tulsa. Second and third place winners, respectively, were Ryan Bunch and Brienna Milleson, both of Thoreau Demonstration Academy.

The schools of the respective winners will receive a variety of educational materials for their libraries. The materials have been donated by Global New Energy Solutions (NES), the company that is sponsoring a nationwide educational effort on the topic of sustainable fuels.

In addition, Global NES has constructed a 30-foot wind turbine at the site of the Helmzar Ropes Course, 1006 N. Quaker in Tulsa.

A Renewable Energy Celebration and Fair was held at the site on Nov. 5, 2009.

Go!Green Expo Held Sept. 12

Over 200 people attended the free Go!Green Expo held Saturday, Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the University of Tulsa's Allen Chapman Activity Center, 440 South Gary, Tulsa.

Keynote speakers featured at the special fall conference were: Mayor Hays of North Little Rock, AR and Steve Hewitt, Greensburg, KS City Administrator.

The Expo featured information-filled seminars led by regional experts. Each seminar was designed to help attendees learn how to take action to reduce energy and water costs while benefitting Oklahoma's environment and the Earth. Three information tracks were Green Building, Green City and Green Living, each addressing three focus topics, Energy, Recycling and Water.

A concurrent exhibition featured products and services that promote sustainability.

The Go!Green Expo was brought to you by the Eastern Oklahoma Chapter of the AIA, the Mayor's Green Team and The University of Tulsa.
