Curbside Recycling Frequently Asked Questions

When should I set out my recycling bin?
Recycling bins must be out by 6 a.m. on your collection day. So, it is suggested that you take them out the night before. Be sure to place them within three feet of the curb, alley or roadway where the truck collects them.

What if my recycling does not fit inside my bin?
You can always set out extra recycling materials. Just put them in paper grocery bags or small cardboard boxes and set them next to your recycling bin for pick-up. Recyclables need to be placed loosely so that the hauler can sort them quickly. You may also purchase an additional bin at a cost of $4.

What if I find that my recycling container is too heavy to carry to the curb?
A wheel and handle kit can be purchased at an additional cost of $4. The kit makes it easy to pull your recyclables to the curb to be collected. A lid to keep moisture from recyclables can also be purchased for $3. Each of these items is a one-time charge that will be applied to your City of Tulsa utility bill.

How will I remember what is recyclable and when my pickup days are?
Cards are available to subscribers listing specific collection days per route through June 2012, as a handy reminder. If you would like a card to post at home, you may download it or call (918) 596-9777 to have one sent to you.

How do I report a missed pick-up?
If you have a missed pick-up or any other questions you can call our recycling hotline at (918) 596-9777.

What happens to my recycled materials?
All materials collected are processed and made into new and reusable items. Glass is made back into new glass containers, aluminum cans into new cans, and newspaper into lower grade paper items such as napkins and paper towels. The fiber from recycled plastic is used to make carpet, t-shirts and other clothing, as well as heavy plastic pallets (used by beverage companies).
