City Poised to Deal With Heavy Rains, Street Flooding
ARCHIVED PRESS RELEASE: Published 10-8-2009
Public Works Street Maintenance managers are monitoring weather
forecasts and rainfall throughout the city and watching locations
where street flooding occurs during heavy rains.
The City recently put permanent signs in a dozen locations
where street flooding is a recurring problem. Those locations
are:
4300 South Sheridan
18500 E 41st Street
20100 E 11th Street
1800 N Mingo Road
2900 N Garnett
11000 E 36th Street North
5500 N Mingo Road
100 West 81st Street
8600 South Elwood
30th and South Riverside Drive
800 N Lewis
6200 to 6400 S Lewis
Cameron and Denver Ave.
There have been other locations in years past where street
flooding was a regularly recurring problem, but drainage
improvement projects have removed those from the list.
Street Maintenance employees, sometimes assisted by employees
from Vegetation Managment or Underground Collections, watch for
street flooding and respond to reports of street floooding from the
Tulsa Police Department or from citizens. They place temporary
barricades on streets and at intersections where flooding
occurs.
The signage is a part of the City's ongoing effort to prevent
motorists from driving into water. The City has publicized
the "Turn Around, Don't Drown" message repeatedly in news
releases, interviews and utility bill inserts for many years.
Anyone noticing street or intersection flooding can report it by
calling 9-1-1 or by calling the Mayor's Action Center at
596-2100.
