City of Tulsa, Tulsa County and Regional Cities Unite in Favor of Sales Tax Collections
ARCHIVED PRESS RELEASE: Published 8-19-2010
The City of Tulsa has filed a petition for declaratory judgment
in the district court in Oklahoma County against the State of
Oklahoma for passing a piece of legislation, House Bill 2359, which
prohibits municipalities from either collecting their own sales
taxes or contracting with a third party to collect their own sales
taxes by an outside firm. By privatizing the collection of local
taxes rather than using the Oklahoma Tax Commission, the City of
Tulsa will be using tax payers dollars more responsibly and
efficiently.
It is estimated to use a private firm to collect our sales
taxes, Tulsa could save close to 40 percent of what we now pay to
the Oklahoma Tax Commission for collecting our sales and use taxes.
Tulsa's annual sales tax collection is close to $175 million. The
projected extra collections through privatization would range
between $7 and $10 million. At the news conference on August 12,
Mayor Bartlett was joined by representatives from Tulsa County,
Jenks, Owasso, Broken Arrow, Sand Springs, Mannford, Glenpool,
Collinsville and Bixby.
