City's Sustainability Plan Earns Award

ARCHIVED PRESS RELEASE: Published 12-8-2011

The City of Tulsa's Sustainability Plan has won a Silver Award for the consulting firm that helped create it.

URS Corp., under the direction of Mayor Dewey Bartlett, worked with Tulsa's Director of  Sustainability Brett Fidler to create the plan that was honored by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Texas in its Engineering Excellence Awards CompetitionCiCC

Judging was based on "uniqueness, originality, technical value to the engineering profession, complexity and how successfully the project met the needs of the client."

Bartlett announced completion of the Sustainability Plan in late October, saying he believes it is a critical tool to drive Tulsa toward a national leadership position for using strategies centered on clean energy and sustainability to stimulate economic growth.

"This energy efficiency study provides a strategy for saving tax dollars and enhances our ability to work toward creating energy-related economic development opportunities, and ultimately jobs," Mayor Bartlett said. "Tulsa has the legacy, resources and the institutional knowledge of the entire energy industry to lead the way."

URS Corporation developed Tulsa's plan over the course of six months with extensive input from city employees. The plan focuses on the City of Tulsa's assets with regard to energy management, water management, solid waste and recycling, fleet management, procurement, alternative and renewable energy and economic development. It outlines and prioritizes many energy and water management initiatives to be implemented for savings. The plan gives step-by-step instructions on how to use resources more efficiently and be good stewards of taxpayer dollars. It also provides specific directions for the City of Tulsa to take action today and start leading the way into a new economy.
