PAWS & THINK
ARCHIVED PRESS RELEASE: Published 1-30-2012
February is National Spay/Neuter Month and the Tulsa Animal
Shelter is encouraging Tulsans to have their pets spayed or
neutered as part of an ongoing effort to reduce numbers of unwanted
and homeless animals in Tulsa.
In 2011, the City of Tulsa's Animal Welfare Division took in
11,769 abandoned, lost or abused animals. More than 7,500 of
those animals had to be euthanized; some because of serious illness
or injuries, but many because the demand for adopted pets is far
less than the number of homes in Tulsa.
Spaying and neutering pets is the best way to prevent unwanted
litters of pets and the Tulsa Animal Shelter is teaming with local
and national animal rescue organizations to promote spaying and
neutering. Tulsa Animal Welfare does not perform spay/neuter for
the general public, but works with Spay Oklahoma and the Oklahoma
Alliance for Animals, two local organizations that promote spaying
and neutering. Spay Oklahoma provides low-cost spay/neuter services
at two locations in the Tulsa areas.
The Oklahoma Alliance for Animals is sponsoring "It's Hip to
Snip!" during the month of February. Spay Day (Feb, 28, 2012) is an
annual campaign of The Humane Society of the United States and
Humane Society International to inspire people to save animal lives
by spaying or neutering pets and feral cats..Spay OK is also
sponsoring special events.
Tulsa animal ordinances require all dogs and cats to be spayed
or neutered by the age of six months (unless the owner secures an
exemption).
Pets adopted from Tulsa Animal Welfare are spayed or neutered
before being released.
