When to call 9-1-1

Do you know when to call? Do you know when NOT to call?

A call to 9-1-1 should always be a
call for help.

  • Call 9-1-1 to get help for someone who is hurt
  • Call 9-1-1 if you see someone taking something that belongs to someone else
  • Call 9-1-1 if you see someone hurting someone else
  • Call 9-1-1 if you smell smoke or see a fire
  • Never call 9-1-1 as a joke
  • Never call 9-1-1 to ask for information
  • Never call 9-1-1 just to see if it works
  • Never call for Road/travel/severe weather information
  • Never call for household/auto repairs
  • Never call for complaints of loud noise, littering, etc.

What is 9-1-1?

9-1-1 is an emergency telephone number that provides IMMEDIATE access to LAW ENFORCEMENT, FIRE and EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES.
9-1-1 is a free call from a pay phone

When to use 9-1-1:

Call 9-1-1 to report crime, fire, heart attack, other serious medical condition or injury, or any situation requiring the IMMEDIATE response of a FIRE TRUCK, AMBULANCE or LAW ENFORCEMENT VEHICLE.

What the 9-1-1 Dispatcher will need to know:

  • The location of the emergency
  • The phone number where the emergency is
  • The nature of the emergency


IMPORTANT: Stay calm, speak clearly, stay on the telephone until you are told to hang up.

DO NOT CALL 9-1-1 for: Road/travel/severe weather information, household/auto repairs, complaints of loud noise, littering, etc.

In any emergency situation -- POLICE, MEDICAL, or FIRE -- call 9-1-1 first.
