Mayor Monroe Nichols was sworn in as the 41st Mayor of Tulsa on December 2, 2024, becoming the city's first African American mayor. Nichols first called Tulsa home as a student at the University of Tulsa, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Political Science and Economics. He later received a master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Oklahoma.
Throughout his career in government, private business, higher education, and the nonprofit sector, Nichols has remained focused on improving outcomes for residents and expanding opportunity for all Tulsans. Prior to serving as mayor, he represented House District 72 in the Oklahoma House of Representatives and served as Chair of the Oklahoma Legislative Black Caucus.
As mayor, Nichols has advanced an ambitious agenda focused on making homelessness brief, rare, and nonrecurring through initiatives such as Safe Move Tulsa; improving student outcomes through the creation of the Mayor's Office of Children, Youth, and Families; expanding economic opportunity and public health initiatives; increasing access to affordable housing through the development of 6,000 new housing units during his administration; strengthening partnerships with tribal nations through meaningful collaboration and co-governance; and working toward his vision of making Tulsa the safest big city in America through a comprehensive, whole-community approach to public safety.
Under Nichols' leadership, Tulsa has embraced a future-focused vision grounded in transparency, community engagement, and collaboration that brings together diverse voices to solve complex challenges. His administration remains committed to delivering measurable results and building a city where every resident has the opportunity to thrive.
