City Encourages Responsible Disposal of Used Cooking Oils; Nov. 29 Collection Event Scheduled

11/24/2025

The City of Tulsa is encouraging Tulsans to properly dispose of used cooking oils this holiday season.

Fats, oils and grease are harmful to City and residential sewer systems, resulting in clogged sewer lines. Improper disposal can also result in damage to local rivers and streams.

Such problems can occur at any time of the year but are particularly prevalent around the holidays when people put leftover food scraps down the drain or incorrectly dispose of leftover cooking oil. While the cost from cleaning up blocked sewer lines and spilled sewage is passed on to utility rate payers, it can also result in costly residential plumbing repair bills.

To prevent these problems and properly dispose of the oils, let them cool completely before pouring them into a sealable, disposable container. Once cooled, throw them in the trash with the lid on tightly. For a more secure disposal, place the sealed container in an extra plastic bag before putting it in the garbage.
