The Greater Tulsa Area African American Affairs Commission will host the Second Annual Black Educator Excellence Awards on Tuesday, October 28, at 6 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 175 E. 2nd St.
The award is named after Dr. La Verne Ford Wimberly, a retired educator and administrator who worked at Tulsa Public Schools for 39 years. Individuals were nominated by their peers and selected by the commission’s education committee in recognition of their outstanding contributions as educators, dedication to their community, and their leadership in Tulsa.
“Our dedicated educators are writing Tulsa’s future by shaping minds and nurturing possibilities in every classroom,” said Dr. Dewayne Dickens, Chair of the Greater Tulsa Area African American Affairs Commission. “By honoring these teachers, we not only celebrate their daily impact but also affirm our collective commitment to education as the cornerstone of community strength.”

Mayor Monroe Nichols and Dr. La Verne Ford Wimberly will be guest speakers at the ceremony.
The Greater Tulsa Area African American Affairs Commission is a group of mayoral-appointed volunteers established by City Ordinance in 2017. The commission primarily serves as an advisory body to the Mayor and City Council to promote understanding, cooperation, and unity amongst African American residents and between all people of the greater Tulsa area.
