The City of Tulsa has installed a new school speed zone and crosswalk at the intersection of East 5th Place and South Lewis Avenue.
The school zone lights are now active and will help improve safety for students and families crossing Lewis Avenue near Kendall-Whittier Elementary School.
The installation was funded through Improve Our Tulsa and was developed in coordination with Tulsa Public Schools after discussions about student crossings near Kendall-Whittier Elementary. The City conducted a traffic study to evaluate speeds along Lewis Avenue and determine where students were most frequently crossing the roadway.
Similar to other school zones throughout Tulsa, the speed limit has been reduced to 25 mph when the school zone flashers are activated. Drivers are encouraged to pay close attention to school zone signs and watch for children and pedestrians crossing. Drivers who exceed the speed limit in an active school zone may receive a doubled fine.
