Some Tulsa Utility Customers to Receive Service Line Notification Letters in December

12/15/2025

No further action is required; No lead service lines have been found in Tulsa

Beginning this month, some Tulsa utility customers will receive an annual Service Line Notification Letter as part of a federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirement.

The service line notification letters, which were also sent last year, is part of the federal program to help inform residents that cities are formally identifying the type of service line their home contains. The number of letters being mailed specifically in Tulsa is decreasing every year as the City systematically carries out its True Reads program to install new meters and inspect service lines and connections.

Tulsans who receive these letters should know they are for information purposes only and do not mean that their water is unsafe or that lead is present in their drinking water.

To date, NO lead service lines have been found in Tulsa.

It's important to note that the letters are mandated under the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR), which require all water utilities across the nation to notify customers each year about the known or unknown materials of their water service lines. In Tulsa’s case, customers will receive a letter only if the material of their service line is currently listed as “unknown.”

Why Customers May Receive a Letter

A customer will receive a notification letter simply because their service line material has not yet been inspected. The City is completing these inspections through the True Reads citywide meter replacement project.

Results from inspections are posted and updated regularly on the project’s interactive map at: www.cityoftulsa.org/truereads

Being listed as “unknown” does not mean a service line contains lead or is dangerous, it only means the City has not yet completed an inspection at that address. Tulsa has inspected more than 47,000 service lines so far, and all have been confirmed as non-lead.

A small number of lead connectors (less than three feet of pipe) have been found at 247 locations, which is less than 1% of the locations inspected. When these are identified, they are immediately removed, and the homeowner is notified.

What Is the Service Line?

The service line is a small pipe that connects the main waterline to a customer’s home. Diagrams and more details are available under the “Lead Service Line/Connector FAQs” section on the True Reads webpage.

What the City Is Doing

Through the True Reads program, the City of Tulsa is:

Tulsa’s drinking water continues to meet and exceed all EPA health and safety standards.

What Customers Need to Do

No action is required from customers who receive a Service Line Notification Letter. The letter serves only to inform water customers that their inspection is still pending.
