Tulsa Route 66 Commission Expands Grant Program to Include Additional Properties

8/29/2025

Tulsa properties along Route 66 built before 1980 are now eligible for a grant to improve exterior building façade

As the Route 66 Centennial approaches, the Tulsa Route 66 Commission has announced the expansion of the Façade Matching Grant Program to include properties along Route 66 that were built before 1980.

The grant program that began in 2023, which previously only extended to existing structures built prior to or between 1926 and 1959, offers a 1:1 matching reimbursement of between $10,000-$40,000 for eligible properties to further advocate for heritage tourism and historic preservation along Tulsa’s historic Route 66.

“The Commission is excited to expand the grant to encourage rehabilitation of both historic and more modern buildings along Tulsa’s Route 66 alignments,” Tulsa Route 66 Commission Chair Josh Stout said. "We recognize the cost needed to preserve, restore or repurpose historic structures, and would like to provide assistance to help properties retain their architectural features.”

To be eligible for the grant, properties must be zoned commercial, industrial or mixed-use and be primarily visible from the Route 66 public right-of-way.

The Commission will prioritize projects that improve the exterior appearance of the building and meet the objectives of the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation of Historic Properties.

The program offers matching grants for eligible restoration expenses, which include but are not limited to restoration or replacement of facade elements, windows, lighting and masonry. Applications must be received, reviewed and approved before work begins, and construction should begin within six to 12 months upon approval. The funding for the program comes from the Vision Tulsa Route 66 Revitalization Project.
